Eat Oysters

As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.
— Earnest Hemingway
The food of thy soul is light and space; feed it then on light and space. But the food of thy body is champagne and oysters; feed it then on champagne and oysters; and so shall it merit a joyful resurrection, if there is any to be
— Herman Melville

My favorite January through February end of the day treat is to walk into Scales in Portland, sit at the bar or in the lounge with friends and devour dozens of Maine oysters on the half shell. It has become a winter ritual and with happy hour prices from 4 to 6 Sunday through Thursday, nothing can be better.

The zinc and dopamine are said to have an aphrodisiac effect

Maybe it is the taste of the sea but there is something so scrumptious about raw oysters that makes it difficult to stop asking for another dozen. Try pairing them with a something bubbly and enjoy the low calorie, high nutrients of this sessile mollusk. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly you can devour them and be left wanting more.

Consider starting your Valentine’s Day dinner with a few dozen, as the zinc and dopamine are said to have an aphrodisiac effect. Those oysters could add an element or romance to Cupid’s day!
